Khalid Shaikh Mohammed (KSM) is now known as the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks. But years ago, he
was already on the FBI's "wanted" list (the poster above is from 1998).
KSM had been indicted for his role in a 1995 plot to bomb twelve U.S. jumbojets, flying out of Manila--a plot
co-authored by Ramzi Yousef, who was the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and a
nephew of KSM. Such an attack would have taken the lives of thousands of passengers and crew
members.
KSM's capture is a major accomplishment. Just as with Ramzi Yousef, however, there are some
inconsistencies in the identification of this key terrorist. The official sources of information give
different versions of KSM's height.
(1) The man described in the Arabic version of the FBI poster is 5 ft 4 in tall (1.65 meters) -- which would
classify him as short, both in conventional terms and according to official FBI guidelines. The Arabic
poster also gives his weight as 132 lbs. (60 kg) -- again, on the low end of the standard height-weight
chart for males.
(2) The English-language version is less precise, but it is not consistent with these numbers: KSM is
described as of "medium" height (which technically means 5"7 to 5"9) and "slightly overweight," which does
not describe a 132-pound man.
KSM's height and weight are presumably known by U.S. authorities, now that he is in U.S. custody. The
exact numbers have not been reported, but it is likely that the "Captured" poster gives an updated (though
vague) account.

On January 6, 1995, a fire broke out in an apartment in Manila occupied by KHALID SHAIKH MOHAMMED. The
information developed from the investigation into this small fire, ultimately saved the lives of thousands of people.
The investigation revealed that in August 1994 through January 1995 in this apartment and elsewhere, KHALID
SHAIKH MOHAMMED unlawfully and willfully conspired to bomb U.S. civilian airliners by placing explosive devices
on twelve airliners flying over the Pacific Ocean during a two day period in January 1995.
Had any of these devices exploded, hundreds of innocent lives could have been lost. People should not have to
live under the fear of terrorism. KHALID SHAIKH MOHAMMED has been indicted for his involvement in this deadly
conspiracy and must stand trial for his crimes.
Indicted for: conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals.
KHALID SHAIKH MOHAMMED was captured on 1 March 2003 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
