The U.S. has key terrorists in custody, but we don't know who they are — or
who was working with them.

Ramzi Yousef
The mastermind of the 1993 bomb that heavily damaged the World Trade Center.

Yousef has been officially identified as Abdul Basit Karim, a Pakistani born and raised in Kuwait.
However, his identification papers show significant discrepancies, and that identification was
therefore questioned by the lead investigating agency,
FBI-NY.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
The mastermind of the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Mohammed is identified as the uncle of Ramzi Yusuf, also a Kuwaiti foreign national of Pakistani
origin.  There are significant unexplained
discrepancies between the physical descriptions from
before and after his capture.

Again, the question is not whether we have the perpetrators in custody,
but
whether we know who they are.

Identification Issues:

Ramzi Yousef (aka Abdul Basit Karim) has two completely different signatures, on the only
two documents that bear his signature.

•    Ramzi Yousef's height as currently known is six feet; prior reports and documentation
give Abdul Basit Karim a height of 5 feet 7 inches —
five inches shorter.

Ramzi Yousef was the bomb-building specialist in the 1993 and 1995 plots. He impressed
William Freeh as a specialist in chemistry and engineering.  But Abdul Basit Karim's training, at
Swansea Institute, was in electronics — and there was no chemistry department.  Either Yousef
is someone else, or Karim received specialized training from someone.

•    Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's height is reported differently in various documents.

•    The single point of confirmation for the identification of Ramzi Yousef as Abdul Basit Karim
is the fact that his
fingerprints match those in Karim's immigration file in Kuwait. That file
shows clear signs of tampering, however — attributable to the Iraqi occupation of 1991.

A standard approach to identification of suspects in custody is DNA testing, which could
readily be done to confirm the kin relationship between the two "masterminds."

Identifying the enemy is a critical issue, but the entire question has been buried in
vague labels and careless assumptions.  The public is certain that we are at war with
"
militant Islam" — but these key terrorists are not militant Muslims.
